Mohn Media now prints the entire circulation of Der Spiegel

Headline

For almost exactly ten years, Mohn Media has been printing half of the circulation of Germany’s most prestigious news magazine week after week – on time and always to the full satisfaction of the customer. This reliability has now paid off, because at the end of last year the Hamburg-based publisher not only extended its long-term cooperation with Mohn Media, but also expanded it significantly. With issue 03/2025, which went on sale on January 11, the large-scale printing company has, for the first time, produced the entire print run of “Der Spiegel” in Gütersloh and Marienfeld. The new exclusive contract with Mohn Media runs for several years and is based on firmly agreed conditions.

“At Mohn Media we are very proud that the Spiegel publishing house has decided to work exclusively with us in the future,” says Mohn Media Managing Director Dirk Kemmerer. “This success is the result of a great team effort. Every department involved has done an excellent job in recent years – the employees in prepress and printing, who have always responded flexibly and professionally to the many short‑notice adjustments, the Probind team, which has continuously worked on specifically expanding our capabilities in saddle stitching and automating large parts of the finishing process, but also the team in our magazines market unit, which, with its consistent customer focus, has ensured that the contract has now been awarded to us in full.” And Stefan Fiedler, Head of the Magazines Market Unit, adds: “We have jointly laid the foundation for the now completed extension and expansion of the contract over the past ten years, because from day one we have proven to our customer in Hamburg that our entire team is capable of mastering every challenge and meeting the publisher’s high demands in terms of quality, flexibility and timing at all times.”

The first production in the new, significantly larger scope was carried out last week to the full satisfaction of the client, despite markedly changed parameters. “We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the entire Mohn Media team for their dedication and commitment in ensuring smooth production of the entire print run with the usual high quality and punctuality,” says Silke Kassuba, Head of Production at SPIEGEL Verlag.

The biggest challenge in the premiere production was the tight schedule of clearly less than 24 hours in total, because now that the entire print run is produced in Gütersloh and Marienfeld, those responsible have to factor in significantly longer transport times in some cases in order to continue supplying recipients in southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland on time. As a result, and of course also due to the much larger number of magazines that have to be printed and stitched, the complexity of the production processes and the time pressure have increased significantly once again. Dirk Kemmerer: “The fact that we have mastered all these challenges demonstrates our very high level of expertise in the production of weekly magazines.”
